  • [P*DA X Education & Career Series] Beyond Beautiful Spaces: A Career in Spatial Design

The President*s Design Award (P*DA) X Education & Career Series offers tertiary students, fresh graduates and professionals an up-close and personal opportunity to dialogue with the recipients of Singapore’s highest design accolade.

In this third edition, hear first-hand from the spatial and interior designers behind Park + Associates, Lekker Architects and Ministry of Design, on how they kick-started their design careers and how you can plan for yours. Discover the in-demand skills you should develop to stay relevant in response to evolving trends, and the role design plays in creating impact and improving lives.

Find out their secret to designing human-centric spaces, and ask them anything from what it takes to become a great designer to how to make an impact in your spatial design career.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Here are the key takeaways shared by some of our attendees, who won themselves an exclusive Singapore Design Week (SDW) tee-shirt and a copy of the P*DA 2020 Publication!

“My greatest takeaway would be the interesting stories each designer shared. It was eye-opening to see their journey and it helps a lot for a student like me because it really reassures me for what I have in store for myself in the future. I also found the discussion of sustainable and future design very insightful.”
– Goh Li Ying, NYP student

“The difference between interior and spatial was something interesting. There is always this misconception between interior and spatial design. But I like how the panels answered them, where interior is beautifying the space while spatial considers the user aspects as well.”
– Chen Wanjun, NAFA student

“Design encompasses much more than designing for practicality and aesthetics. There are many environments in our daily lives that could potentially be constantly provoking pre-conceived conventions, and the role of the designer is to take a look holistically and bring the best experience possible for the user.”
– Firstian Fushada, NAFA student

PORTFOLIO CLINIC

50 students from 5 diploma programmes in the spatial and interior design discipline from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, LASALLE College of the Arts, Nanyang Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic participated in the Portfolio Clinic, helmed by the 4 designers featured in the webinar.

The students had the opportunity to get personalised feedback on their portfolios while learning from their peers in a group setting. They also went on a tour of the National Design Centre and its various programmes, conducted by Indie Singapore!
