Tan Kok Hiang is a Founding Director of Forum Architects Pte Ltd, a firm based in Singapore since 1994. He obtained his Bachelor of Architecture (Hons) from the National University of Singapore in 1987. In 2014, Kok Hiang was named Designer of the Year at the President*s Design Award and his firm has won more than 60 local and international awards in the past thirty years. Amongst these, the Assyafaah Mosque was exhibited in Second Nature, Venice Biennale 2004, Yale-NUS won the Chicago Athenaeum Award in 2016, Jurong Town Hall Restoration won the Heritage Award in 2018, Khoo Teck PuatNational University Children’s Institute (KTP-NUCMI) won the IIDA Healthcare Design Award and the International Academy for Design and Health Award in 2020, NUS Technoedge Canteen won the ASEAN Energy Award in 2022 for Energy Efficient Building and 61 Robinson Building won the SIA Architectural Design Award 2022 for A&A works.
Kok Hiang chairs the NHB Preservation of Sites and Monuments Advisory Board, a post he has held since 2017. He previously served on the design advisory panel for the Housing Development Board and is currently serving on multiple URA Design Advisory Panels for various projects. He also sits on the Singapore Land Authority State Properties Advisory Committee and the Industry Advisory Board of CDE at the National University of Singapore. He has served as a jury member in various competitions including as a Jury member for the President’s Design Award Singapore in 2020. Kok Hiang is also a Professor (Practice) from 2015 to present at the College of Design and Engineering at the National University of Singapore. Kok Hiang was awarded the Public Service Medal (PBM) in 2021.
He has spoken at various conferences organized by international architectural bodies, such as Japanese Architects’ Association, the Indonesian Institute of Architects and the Kerala Chapter of the Indian Institute of Architects and the Golden Pin Award (Taiwan). Kok Hiang also holds a fifth degree black belt in Aikido and conducts Aikido classes for adults and children on weekends as a volunteer.
