P*DA x D&AD: Super Design = Super Impact

The exhibition pays tribute to the designs that have made an impact on the lives of individuals, families and the wider community. There are also stories about the positive impact of design as well as stories on how design can transform a city into a better place to live and work.

One of the most well-known stories is the Fearless Girl that represents the power of women today and tomorrow. Fearless Girl is about gender diversity in the workplace. The bronze figure in New York City is meant to encourage companies to recruit more women to their corporate boards of directors. Garnering over 1 billion Twitter impressions with just a hashtag, the Fearless Girl became an instant hit on social media.

The exhibition also featured The Enabling Village that was awarded the P*DA Design of the Year in 2016. Enabling Village focuses on making places more inclusive for example, supermarket aisles becoming more wheelchair-friendly, training facilities for the disabled and ramps in the amphitheatre.

On the 5th of March, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Communications & Information graced the exhibition during the launch of the fifth edition of the Singapore Design Week (SDW) at the National Design Centre. Before visiting the exhibition, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim had given an address at the SDW 2018 opening, speaking about his hopes that Singaporeans would recognise the value of design and how our lives can be made better by design

Held from 5 March to 23 April, the exhibition attracted 14,276 visitors over two months including a group of 25 foreign journalists from the Journalist Visit Program. The exhibition received favourable responses with more than half of the participants looking forward to future President*s Design Awards events. Some visitors commented that “the designs are unique and life-changing” while some feedback shared that visitors wanted a more interactive exhibition. So, watch out for future exhibitions with more interactive elements!

Super Design, Super Heroes exhibition is also a prelude to the announcement of the President*s Design Award 2018 recipients on 17 July 2018.
As such, all of the recipients are exemplary of the Award’s increased focus and commitment to design impact.

If you missed this showcase, there’s an opportunity for you to visit an interactive version on the President*s Design Award (P*DA) website that will be launched this month. The interactive platform will enable visitors to do a virtual “walk-through” of our exhibitions. Visitors will be able to click on each panel to read the text, view photos, and watch videos, just as they would at a physical exhibition.
